An Assistant Manager for Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems supports the MEP Manager in overseeing the design, installation, testing, and commissioning of building services across construction or facilities management projects. Core Responsibilities Project Coordination and Supervision The Assistant Manager coordinates daily MEP activities across mechanical (HVAC, fire protection), electrical (power distribution, lighting), and plumbing (water supply, drainage, sanitation) systems. They supervise MEP engineers, technicians, and subcontractors, ensuring work progresses according to project schedules and specifications. They assist in resource allocation, manpower planning, and equipment deployment to maintain workflow efficiency. Technical Review and Quality Management They review MEP shop drawings, submittals, and material specifications for compliance with design intent and standards. During construction, they conduct site inspections to verify installation quality, proper coordination between trades, and adherence to approved drawings. They identify clashes or conflicts between MEP systems and structural/architectural elements, coordinating resolutions with relevant teams. Design Coordination The Assistant Manager participates in design development, ensuring MEP systems integrate seamlessly with architectural and structural components. They coordinate with consultants and designers to resolve technical queries, review design changes for cost and schedule impacts, and ensure systems meet building codes, energy efficiency requirements, and client specifications. Testing and Commissioning Support They oversee pre-commissioning activities including system flushing, pressure testing, and equipment calibration. During commissioning, they coordinate testing protocols, witness equipment performance tests, and verify systems operate according to design parameters. They review test reports and ensure defects are rectified before handover. Compliance and Documentation Ensuring compliance with local building codes, safety regulations (electrical codes, fire safety standards), and environmental requirements is essential. They maintain comprehensive project documentation including as-built drawings, operation and maintenance manuals, test certificates, equipment warranties, and completion records. Budget and Schedule Management The Assistant Manager assists in tracking MEP budgets, monitoring costs against allocations, and identifying potential overruns. They contribute to schedule development, track milestone completion, and flag delays requiring management intervention. They review contractor payment applications for completed MEP work. Problem-Solving and Issue Resolution When technical issues arise—equipment failures, design discrepancies, installation problems—they investigate root causes and develop practical solutions. They manage non-conformances, coordinate corrective actions with contractors, and ensure timely resolution to minimize project impact. Stakeholder Communication They interface with project managers, architects, structural engineers, contractors, and clients to communicate MEP progress, challenges, and requirements. They attend coordination meetings, prepare progress reports, and provide technical input for decision-making. Safety Oversight The Assistant Manager ensures MEP work complies with safety protocols, conducts safety inspections for electrical and mechanical installations, and promotes safe work practices among MEP teams. They coordinate permit-to-work systems for high-risk activities like electrical testing or hot work. Key Skills Required Strong technical knowledge of MEP systems, building codes, and construction methodologies is fundamental. Project management capabilities, leadership skills, and the ability to coordinate multiple disciplines simultaneously are essential. Proficiency with MEP design software (AutoCAD MEP, Revit MEP), BIM coordination tools, and project management systems supports effective execution.
