Job description

**Software Development Engineer 2 – Fulfilment** **About Urban Company** Urban Company is Asia's largest tech-enabled home services marketplace, operating across India, UAE, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia. Customers use our platform to book a wide range of services — beauty and grooming, cleaning, plumbing, carpentry, appliance repair, painting, and more — delivered at home, at a time of their choosing. Behind this simple promise sits a deep technology stack that matches millions of customers with trained, background-verified service partners while guaranteeing a standardised, high-quality, and reliable experience every single time. **About the Fulfilment Team** The Fulfilment team sits at the heart of Urban Company's marketplace — we make sure every customer gets the right service, from the right partner, at the right time. We do this through three core charters: - Planning & Shaping: Efficiently planning supply to meet forecasted customer demand, and intelligently shaping that demand to meet business goals. - Capacity Management: Managing partner time and computing real-time availability of UC services for any given time slot, customer location, business category, and skill requirement. - Allocation & Recovery: Assigning the most suitable partner for each job while maintaining fairness in partner earnings, and protecting customer experience in cases of no-shows, cancellations, or partner unavailability. These are classic marketplace optimization problems — forecasting, matching, scheduling, and real-time recovery — solved at the scale of millions of monthly service requests. **Job Description: SDE-2** We are looking for experienced Software Development Engineers (SDE-2) to join our Fulfilment team. You will work on complex, high-impact engineering challenges — the systems you build directly determine whether a customer's booking is fulfilled seamlessly and whether a partner earns fairly. If you enjoy problems that blend distributed systems, optimization, and real-world operational constraints, this is the team for you. **Responsibilities** - Design and build scalable, high-performance, fault-tolerant systems and services that power supply planning, capacity, and allocation. - Develop and optimize intelligent algorithms and ML/AI-driven solutions for demand forecasting, capacity planning, and partner–job matching. - Own features end-to-end — from ideation and design to deployment, monitoring, and iteration across a modern tech stack. - Raise the bar on the team's engineering practices: code quality, system architecture, observability, and operational excellence. - Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Analytics, and Data Science teams to translate business problems into robust technical solutions. **What Are We Looking For?** - Experience: 2–3 years of experience building large-scale backend applications or Products. -Technical Strength: Strong foundation in Data Structures, Algorithms, OS, Networks, and Database fundamentals, with a good understanding of distributed systems, concurrency, caching, and scalable architectures. - Backend Skills: Proficiency in at least one backend language (Node.js, Java, Go, or Python). Experience with databases (MongoDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL) and messaging systems like Kafka is a plus; exposure to cloud platforms and production observability is desirable. - AI Fluency: Hands-on experience leveraging AI in day-to-day engineering — using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, Claude) to ship faster, and/or building with LLMs, ML models, or intelligent automation in production systems. Curiosity to apply. - AI to real marketplace problems is a strong plus. - Mindset: Bias for action, end-to-end ownership, and comfort with ambiguity. - Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders. **Why Join Us?** - Work on marketplace-scale optimisation problems that few companies in the region get to solve. - High ownership from day one — your systems ship to millions of users. - A culture that rewards initiative, craftsmanship, and first-principles thinking.
