Amazon is seeking a Tax Manager to join its Federal Tax Compliance and Reporting team. The Amazon tax department is a fast-paced, team-focused, and dynamic environment. This position will focus on Amazon’s domestic tax compliance and reporting obligations including preparation of federal income tax filings and the U.S. Federal elements of Amazon’s worldwide tax provision. Primary Responsibilities:Compliance & Reporting• Prepare and review federal tax returns and audit-ready workpapers including the US reporting of foreign transactions• Prepare and review tax adjustments for financial accounting for income taxes and maintain deferred tax positions• Manage the analysis and documentation of tax implications of emerging business issues, technical tax positions taken, and integration of such positions into the compliance/reporting process• Research and analyze tax planning ideas to determine impacts for U.S. income tax reporting and the federal elements of the worldwide tax provision• Keep up to date on tax law and the organizational impact of changesStrategic Influence & Decision-Making• Influence and inform strategic decision-making with data-driven recommendations and tax/business acumen• Use judgment to set direction for analysis and modeling where data points may be scarce• Escalate judgment-based recommendations for approval and drive high-velocity decision-makingProcess Improvement & Automation• Drive process improvements and lead automation efforts in coordination with the Tax Technology team to streamline, simplify, and standardize processes• Lead cross-functional projects from requirements through implementation, regularly auditing progress and adjusting to meet objectives• Drive use of operational excellence best practices and build on work already done in other areas rather than reinventing the wheelCommunication & Stakeholder Management• Drive strategic communications and foster constructive dialogue with stakeholders across teams• Adjust communication style based on audience and articulate complex tax issues to non-Tax partners effectively• Drive alignment and lead resolution of complex tax issues by navigating across teams to identify the right participants• Use data to challenge and influence business partners, peers, and individuals at levels aboveOthers• Train and mentor team members• Execute special projects as neededBasic Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required• Minimum 8+ years’ federal tax experience in public accounting and/or multi-national corporation• Knowledge of federal income taxation and some experience with state and local and US outbound tax issues• ASC740 accounting for income taxes knowledge and experience• Strong communication, project management and collaboration skills• Ability to work independently with limited general supervision, effectively prioritizing competing demands in a fast-paced environment• Experience with tax operations and ability to drive process improvements• Strong Excel skills and deep expertise with at least one major tax compliance software product• Experience with Oracle and Hyperion a plus• Experience with Corptax a plus• Lifelong learner and curious about new possibilitiesPreferred Qualifications• Master’s Degree preferred• Chartered Accountant, CPA or Enrolled Agent certification• Experience using Corptax/OneSource/other tax preparation software• Technically proficient with strong accounting, analytical, financial modeling and research skills• Self-starter with ability to prioritize tasks and independently define, implement, and manage creation of new processes• Strong computer skills including MS Office, OracleOther Preferred Qualifications – Professional traits that are not unique to this position, but necessary for Amazon leaders:• Strong controllership orientation with relentlessly high standards• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment• Thinks strategically, but stays on top of tactical execution• Results oriented• Hard-working, quick learner with a positive “can do” attitude and solid professionalism• Thinks big and has convictions• Exhibits excellent judgment and a good sense of humor• Lifelong learner and curious about new possibilitiesA day in the lifePrepare and review federal tax return workpapers; maintain deferred tax positions under ASC 740Research tax law changes and document implications on compliance/reportingPrepare data-driven recommendations to inform strategic tax decisionsDrive process improvements and automation with the Tax Technology teamLead cross-functional projects from requirements through implementationAlign stakeholders across teams to resolve cross-functional tax mattersCoach and mentor team members on technical and professional growthExecute special projects as assigned
