If you're passionate about engineering and innovation, Synchrony's Engineering Team is the place to be. **Role Summary/Purpose:** The API Gateway Engineer is responsible for developing, automating, and enhancing enterprise API Gateway capabilities across Synchrony. This role supports secure, scalable, and reliable API integrations by strengthening gateway policies, tooling, and platform functionality. The engineer also provides architectural guidance to application teams, promotes API Gateway and REST best practices, and helps drive consistency across RESTful, microservices, and SOA-based environments. **Key Responsibilities:** - Develop, enhance, and maintain enterprise API Gateway tooling, shared components, and policies, ensuring all changes are thoroughly tested and validated before production deployment and post deployment support. - Design and implement REST APIs and API specifications using JSON and YAML - Support enterprise-wide improvements in API logging, security, authentication, authorization, and error handling - Build and maintain API Gateway engineering enablers, including service callouts, policy tuning, and automation - Provide architectural guidance on API Gateway usage, REST best practices, and microservices/SOA integration - Work with Java Spring, Node.js, JavaScript, and XML-based technologies - DevOps and CI/CD practices using tools such as Jenkins, Nexus, CloudBees, and Bitbucket - Implement and support API Gateway security controls, including OAuth 2.0, JWT, SAML, API keys, and cryptography-related requirements - Strengthen platform reliability through proactive monitoring, observability, and alerting using tools such as Splunk and New Relic - Participate in Agile and SAFe ceremonies, including refinement, planning, daily standups, backlog grooming, and reviews - Analyze production issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement sustainable fixes **Qualifications/Requirements:** - Bachelor's degree and minimum 3+ years of experience in technology with hands-on Apigee or any other enterprise API Gateway experience - Working knowledge of Apigee experience, including Apigee X or Apigee Edge is preferred and willingness to build deeper hands-on experience - Sound Understanding of RESTful API design, SOAP APIs, and API specifications such as OpenAPI/Swagger - Practical knowledge of API security protocols, including OAuth 2.0, JWT, SAML, and API keys - Experience and implementing designing secure, scalable, high-performance APIs and managing Apigee security policies for compliance. - Technical proficiency in Java Spring, Node.js, JavaScript, and XML Experience with CI/CD and DevOps practices and related tools such as Jenkins, Nexus, CloudBees, and Bitbucket - Familiarity with cloud environments and API Gateway integration patterns - Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills **Desired Characteristics:** - Familiarity with core Apigee capabilities, including policy configuration, shared services, and standard operational best practices - Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence team members and stakeholders - Ability
