Job description

Role purpose The Apprentice – Tier 1 Payroll will support first-line employee pay queries and core payroll administration activities under close supervision, ensuring a consistent and high-quality service to employees while learning end-to-end payroll and HR Tier 1 processes in line with GSK standards and local regulations. This role is part of GSK’s Early Talent offering for apprentices, with a structured plan, mentoring and on-the-job learning aligned to the apprentice’s field of study.  Key responsibilities • Handle Tier 1 payroll queries from employees (e.g. missing pay, tax code differences, time entries, allowances) using standard Tier 1 guidance, resolving where possible and escalating to Payroll/Data Management only when needed.  • Verify data in Workday (e.g. new joiner details, payment elections, leave status, allowances) before raising or redirecting tickets, following cut-off timelines. Run and save standard payroll reports from Workday after payroll cut-off (e.g. address changes, worker changes) and place them in the agreed shared locations for payroll/vendor use.  • Support pre- and post-payroll checks by updating checklists, comparing Workday data with vendor outputs, and highlighting discrepancies for resolution by senior Tier 1 or Payroll colleagues.  • Maintain trackers and documentation (e.g. mutation/changes logs, payroll trackers, archiving lists) and coordinate archiving of payroll-related documents in line with local work instructions. • Support processing of specific payments/allowances (e.g. housing allowances or other local benefits) by reviewing approvals, updating payroll tracking tables and notifying Payroll/vendors within the payroll cut-off timelines.  • Work through ServiceNow and shared mailboxes to manage tickets and communications with employees, HR, Payroll and external providers, following documented processes.  • Adhere to data privacy, control and documentation requirements, including correct use of shared drives, archiving vendors and ticketing, as described in payroll/Tier 1 work instructions.  Learning and development • Work to an agreed apprentice plan aligned with university/education requirements, focusing on practical payroll and HR Tier 1 skills. • Receive day-to-day guidance from HR Tier 1 and Payroll specialists, with a named buddy/coordinator where multiple apprentices are in place.  • Gain hands-on experience with tools such as Workday, ServiceNow, shared drives/SharePoint and payroll vendor platforms used in the local payroll landscape.  Basic qualifications • Interest in building a career in HR, payroll, finance or shared services, with motivation to learn payroll processes and tools.  • Comfort working with numbers and Excel/other spreadsheets, including updating trackers and reconciling data.  • Good written and verbal communication skills to interact with employees and internal teams in a clear and service-oriented way. • Attention to detail and ability to follow documented work instructions accurately.  Preferred qualifications Bachelor's Degree (BCOM, BBA) Skills Accounting, Data Management, Government Regulation, Payroll Processing, Payroll Reconciliation, Payroll Reporting, SLA Management, Stakeholder Management, Teamwork, Vendor Management    Why GSK?
