The role is expected to combine deep technical execution with leadership, coaching, governance, and cross-functional collaboration across engineering, architecture, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and operations. Key Responsibilities • Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of DevOps standards, CI/CD pipelines, release automation, and deployment governance across engineering teams. • Build and optimise automated build, test, security scan, and deployment pipelines using tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, or equivalent platforms. • Drive Infrastructure as Code adoption using Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation, Helm, or similar technologies to create reusable, governed, and repeatable environments. • Lead containerisation and orchestration practices using Docker, Kubernetes, and managed cloud services across AWS, Azure, or GCP environments. • Establish observability practices across logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, alerts, and operational runbooks using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/EFK, Datadog, Splunk, or OpenTelemetry. • Embed security and compliance into the delivery lifecycle, including secret management, vulnerability scanning, policy-as-code, image scanning, access control, and least-privilege cloud permissions. • Champion SRE practices including SLIs, SLOs, error budgets, incident response, post-incident reviews, capacity planning, resilience engineering, and automation to reduce manual toil. • Partner with application teams to improve engineering productivity, deployment frequency, release quality, environment stability, and developer self-service capabilities. • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, code reviews, standards definition, and hands-on problem solving for DevOps engineers and application teams. • Drive cloud cost optimisation, platform efficiency, environment hygiene, and operational governance across non-production and production workloads. Qualifications • 8+ years of experience across DevOps, SRE, platform engineering, cloud engineering, release engineering, or infrastructure automation, with at least 2 years in a lead or senior technical ownership role. • Strong hands-on experience with CI/CD tooling, source control, branching strategies, release orchestration, artefact repositories, environment promotion, and deployment governance. • Deep knowledge of cloud infrastructure, networking, identity and access management, security controls, monitoring, backup, resilience, and disaster recovery patterns. • Proficiency in scripting and automation using Python, Bash, PowerShell, Groovy, or similar languages. • Strong understanding of Kubernetes, Docker, Helm, service mesh concepts, container registries, image hardening, and cloud-native deployment patterns. • Experience implementing DevSecOps practices including automated security testing, software composition analysis, vulnerability remediation, secrets management, compliance reporting, and audit readiness. • Ability to work with distributed teams, influence engineering standards, manage technical stakeholders, and communicate clearly with both senior leaders and hands-on engineers. • Experience in financial services, insurance, regulated environments, or enterprise technology organisations is preferred. Leadership Expectations • Act as the technical authority for DevOps engineering practices, setting clear standards and driving adoption across teams. • Coach engineers on automation-first delivery, operational excellence, secure engineering, and reliability mindset. • Translate strategic delivery goals into practical platform roadmaps, tooling improvements, measurable engineering outcomes, and continuous improvement initiatives. Success Measures • Improved deployment frequency, release predictability, pipeline automation, and lead time for change. • Reduced manual deployment effort, environment drift, incident recurrence, and mean time to recovery. • Higher adoption of standardised CI/CD, IaC, observability, DevSecOps, and self-service engineering capabilities across teams.
